Inspiration
Arribada means ‘Arrival by sea’ in Spanish.
This saree is inspired by the birthing journey of the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles. Their synchronized, large scale nesting process lasts over ten days before the new moon, when hundreds of sea turtles gather off the coast. After a few days and a secret signal, they make their way up on the beach en masse to lay golf ball sized eggs. Very mysterious but a vision to witness indeed!
There are specially two spectacular breeding sites for these endangered turtles in India. They are Tamil Nadu and Orissa. And of course the biggest breeding grounds for these Olive Ridley turtles are in Costa Rica
The art work is executed borrowing the tribal Gond art principals. The main principals of the style is use of vibrant colours, elementary strokes of lines, dots and dashes to render a complex landscape in this case sea scape.

When a designer goes all out and brings your idea to life, improvises and makes it even better , resonates totally with your passion, the outcome is always precious. This is one such treasure of a saree. The designer herself is a diver and is in love with the ocean. When I spoke to her about Arribada ( birth of turtlings and coming up from the beach sands in thousands) she immediately caught on to it! Look how beautifully the story has emerged through hand painting. The pallu has the ocean floor depicted and all the turtlings in the border are rushing towards the water!!! Thrilled to bits!!!
